Salem Willows (Salem, MA)

Location: 167 Fort Ave, Salem, MA

Hours: The website for Salem Willows shows their hours as being daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. but you can get in to the park before 11. We got their just before 10 and there was already some people there. I think the hours are the hours of operation for the restaurants and other businesses in that area.

Cost: Free

Parking: There are about 60 metered parking spots. The meters cost 25 cents an hour. There is also about 50 additional free parking spots in a nearby lot and off street parking is available.

Dog Friendly: Yes

Highlights: Family friendly, arcades, restaurants, willow trees, harbor, scenic walking path, grassy areas to grill, relax and for kids to play, jetty, place to rent surfboards and other aquatic sporting goods

As I entered Salem Willows I couldn’t help but think of my childhood of carnivals and traveling shows. My friends and I would be so excited when the fair came to town. Now, the fair is always in town. In these days of sit down eateries and chain restaurants, it was refreshing. If you d go, try the slushies or get a cone at Cappy’s!

Salem Willows has changed so much since its original opening in 1880. Willows Pavilion which featured a skating rink and restaurant dominated the landscape. Now, the area where the takeout food vendors are located still keeps the name of “on the line”. But, the restaurants are much different. In place of the sit down, grand restaurants stand take out vendors and ice cream shops.

There is also a stage for bands and other entertainers to perform. Named after former Salem resident and veteran, the Robert F Hayes Band Stand holds a summer concert series every year as well as holding other events.

But, there is so much more to Salem Willows than nostalgic stroll past the smell of flour dough and the buzzing and ringing from the vendors and arcades. Salem Willows is also, as the name would suggest, known for all of the willow trees planted to offer shade and beauty to the area.

The mostly shady loop around the bay and back too the parking area is an easy half mile walk. Along the way there are benches to sit on and a jetty to fish off or just enjoy the views. The views from the bay were very pretty. A variety of flowers and scenic views frame the busy blue waterway.

There is also a place to rent surf/paddle/body boards and other watercraft and flotation devices.

Salem’s love of art is evident even in the most unlikely places. These trash cans and rocks displayed some of the street art of Salem. I especially like the art on the rocks. Each block has a different symbol of the area painted on them.

Salem Willows is a great place to bring your dog for a short walk. Dixie, a 4 year old Maltese, was enjoying the seasonal weather and cool breeze when she stopped to pose for photos for me.

Historic Homes of Salem (Salem, MA)

The historical homes of Salem help give the city a quaint feel. You almost feel like you’re stepping into the pre-Colonial and Colonial days of New England as you traverse these historic areas. They also help keep the city connected to its past. The homes of Salem range from the wood houses to the brick structures you see scattered around the city. But, they are all beautiful in their own right.

There are 46 homes listed on the national register of historic homes in Salem, MA. Don’t worry, I only photographed a few of them. Let’s start with the John Ward House. John Ward was a currier (a leather finisher)

The John Ward House, now owned by the Peabody Essex Museum, is an example of First Period architecture. Originally built at a different location (St Peter Street, only a few blocks away from its current location) in 1684, the house had many renovations over the years. It is located just down the street from the Salem Witch Museum.

The Joshua Ward House, located closer to the Salem district area, has a more sordid history. It is built on the same land as the birthplace of the former Sheriff George Corwin. Corwin is known for his overzealous involvement in the questioning and torture of accused witches during the Salem Witch Hysteria. The house is said to be haunted by Corwin. Additionally, George Washington is said to have spent a night there in 1789.

The Corwin House, also known as the “Witch House” is located a little farther away from the center of town on Essex Street. It is the house where accused witches were allegedly tortured in the hopes they would confess. The fact these accused witches could withstand some of his tactics such as strangulation and still held their innocence is testament to their strength and integrity. Naturally, this house is said to have paranormal activity.

There are quite a few houses on Brown Street that have a pre-Colonial or Colonial look to them. Many of them are decorated for the holiday season. Here are a few

Closer to the wharf, there are a cluster of historic homes.

This home was built in 1843 by Johnathan Whipple

This home, belonging to Penn-Townsend (a mariner), was built in 1771.

This home, built by Jesse Kenney (a trader), was built in 1804.

Along Derby Street, there are a few historic homes, directly across from the wharf. The Custom House remains in its original location there. A park ranger stands at the base of the stairwell (on your right).

The Hawkes House is the former home of Benjamin Hawkes, a ship builder and prominent resident of Salem.

Of course, this is one of the most famous buildings in Salem, Massachusetts. There was no photography allowed in the House of the Seven Gables. So, I did not go in as I have already been there several times and the only reason to go on a tour this year would be to photograph the inside of the building.

There are also some pretty inns adjacent to to The House of the Seven Gables.

But, the really impressive homes were on Chestnut Street. This house was built in 1850 for Francis Cox, a merchant.

Some of the neighbors did not take kindly to my photography. But, I carried on.

Deacon John Stone,a distiller, lived here.

Even the sidewalk and street are charming.

This house was built in 1832 for Elizabeth King.

Many of the historic homes have been converted to residencies. In fact, almost all of them seemed to be inhabitated either as homes, apartment buildings or inns. This house was originally built in 1804 for Amos and Solomon Towne.

Some of these homes are so beautiful during the fall season. I can only imagine how pretty they must look during the winter with freshly driven snow falling on the trees and walkways.

This was my favorite house on Chestnut Street. It wasn’t as big as some of the other buildings. But, it was cozy and cute.

It was originally built by Stephen C. Phillips.

The Statues of Salem (Salem, MA)

Salem, MA and the people of Salem are known for more than just the well publicized witch hysteria. While the city remembers this somber time with memorials, they also have other monuments, statues and other decorations, particularly during the Halloween season.

This is probably the most recognized statue in Salem. It is the statue of Roger Conant, the founder of Salem. Because of the dark, foreboding image of the statue and the fact that it is located directly in front of the Salem Witch Museum, it is often at first glance considered a monument in tribute to the victims of the witch hysteria. That was my thoughts when I first saw it as a younger person. As an fyi, it is very hard to take a photo of the statue without throngs of crowds nearby doing the same thing, often times ruining your photo. I had to arrive very early Halloween day to get this photo without a lot of people or car traffic. It is a very popular stop for tourists.

While we’re all familiar with people like Nathaniel Hawthorne, there are other people who were pivotal members of Salem that are less noted than Hawthorne like the reverend Theobald Mathew, an apostle of temperance, according to the script on the statue. Even if you’re not familiar with people like Mathew, the artwork and of the statues is enough to impress anyone.

Speaking of Hawthorne, just farther down the road on, you guessed it, Hawthorne Boulevard is the Nathaniel Hawthorne statue.

One of the things you have to love about Salem is they don’t try to sweep the past under the rug and they try to educate others about tolerance. This sign for the Witches Education League is an example of this.

There is also a memorial to the The Blue Star Memorial Program which is dedicated to all of the men and women who serve in the United States armed services.

Salem has another memorial dedicated to a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, John Phillip Riley. Riley is one of 5 Medal of Honor recipients from Salem, dating back to the Civil War.

This memorial is dedicated to the Boys of the Immaculate Conception who served during World War I.

This monument, located in Salem Common, is a tribute to those who died during World War II

The Salem Fire Department has two memorials at their Ladder 2 station.

One memorial is a memorial to the victims of September 11.The metal in the middle of the monument is from the rubble at Ground Zero. The two concrete beams in the background represent the North and South towers at the World Trade Center.

There are two ceramic angels in a cup placed on the memorial. People leave pennies in honor of the victims.

The other memorial at the fire station is in honor of the firefighters from their station who have paid the ultimate price

Closer to the heart of the city, there is also a monument with a quote from Eli Wiesel.

During the Halloween festivities, the original water pump was displayed in the main drag of the walk way on Essex Street. This is the original pump the people of salem had to use before they had indoor plumbing and other amenities we take for granted.

Some of the monuments, statues and signs are more lighthearted like the Bewitched statue in Lappin Park. Little known fact: some of the Bewitched shows were filmed in Salem, MA.

This placard reminds us that even ghosts like bacon.

I also met some very cute dogs during my travels.

As these monuments, statues, memorials, signs and dogs have shown, there is more to Salem than just the Halloween festivities. My next blog will deal with the impressive architecture of the homes, museums and other buildings of the Salem area from my recent visits.

Happy Halloween (Salem, MA)

It’s official. I’m a Salemholic. Today was my third visit to the Halloween Hub of America this October. But, what better place to spend this crisp autumn Halloween?

I have never been so happy while at the same time being packed in one concentrated area.

The costumes ranged from the absurdly cute

Edward Scissorhands (probably the costume of the day)

Willy Wonka (with an Oompa Loompa and Violet Beauregard). I guess Violet still hasn’t learned her lesson about eating the “three course meal gum.”

Star Wars (I especially like how they mixed it up a bit and used Luke’s ty fighter costume rather than the robe you usually see him wear)

Darth Vader was understandably upset that he just missed Luke and company

One of the best things to see is when a family or couple or group of friends get dressed up together. After all, the couple that haunts together stays together. Or, something like that.

Due to the large crowds and the hectic atmosphere, I was unable to get the names of all the dogs from their moms and dads. But, I did want to share their photos.

A great day for everyone, 2 legged or 4 legged. I will be posting a few more Salem blogs later this week mostly dealing with the memorials, statues and impressive architecture from the area and probably a few more dogs ( : If I included all my photos from my trips in this blog it would have been even longer and I didn’t want to over do it. The Burying Point (Salem, MA)

Nestled behind the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, is the final resting place for some of Salem’s earlier residents; the Burying Point. Located among the bustling downtown Salem area, the Burying Point is the oldest cemetery in Salem, MA,

Tour groups and visitors from all over the country walk over sacred graves. In fact, the Burying Point is one of the most popular attractions in Salem.

The cemetery is well kept and the vast majority of the visitors are respectful of the tenants there. The one thing I find to be a little weird, besides the obvious weirdness of walking around a cemetery as though it was an “attraction”, was the “haunted house” located feet away from the cemetery. I’m generally not one to care either way, but it still felt odd hearing ghastly screams and people ordering hot apple cider while we stroll along the cemetery.

Although many headstones are difficult to read, it is worth observing that many of them show the female deceased as the “wife of…” Just another sign of the times.

While many of his relatives reside in the cemetery of the overly commercialized town of Salem, Nathaniel Hawthorne is not buried in Burying Point. Instead he rests in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

The storied feud of Nathaniel Hawthorne and his ancestors is of legend. Just to recap, John Hathorne, a Salem magistrate, was appointed by the then Governor Sir William Phips to be a judge in the Salem Witch Trials. However, during the trials, he acted more like a prosecutor than a judge. He would often presume the guilt of an accused witch and demand they confess to witchcraft as well as pressuring accused witches to name other witches after they were inevitably found guilty or they confessed under pressure of Hathorne and his court. He became known as a “hanging judge”.

In light of his ancestors misdeeds, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Judge Hathorne’s great grandson, would change his name by adding a “w” after the “Ha” in his last name and he would distance himself farther from Judge Hathorne by penning The Scarlet Letterand speaking out against the deeds of his ancestor.

Haunted Decorations (Salem, MA)

There’s something magical about Halloween. It’s a time when adults can still pretend to be a kid again, even just for one night. Even the most mature, sober person can forget their responsibilities and relive their carefree days just a little.

For the remainder of the week, I will be posting the remaining photos from my trips to Salem, MA. In this edition, I am posting photos of the various decorations, some other miscellaneous things and, of course, a few dogs from my travels in Salem.

Salem is known world wide for getting into the spirit of Halloween. Everywhere you look, there are decorations of the season.

Besides the vendors selling merchandise there are also games and other fun types of activities. This particular activity was meant to see if people could maintain eye contact with a complete stranger and possibly make a connection, even on just a platonic level. It sounds like a good ice breaker to me. The comments about the activity on the board are very interesting and humorous.

Salem is also creative in how they tie the season to other causes like this witch who encourages people to keep Salem “wicked” clean.

Even Witch’s Brew Cafe got into the mix.

Other stores and attractions, many open only for the Halloween season, decorate for the season.

Some stores have humorous names without even realizing it. Of course, this is a name of a hole in a barrel that often contains alcohol. But, it may have a double meaning..

This is why Salem is so great. The people even get into it. This resident decorated his or her residency and put out a can for donations for the Lion’s Club.

This ghostly figure was seen in Salem harbor.

Salem is also known for its art and not just during the Halloween season. There is art everywhere it seems. These paintings on Essex Street portray a mermaid and a fish-type creature.

The dogs in Salem also get into the Halloween spirit. It’s hard to tell from a front view but Astro had tarantulas drawn on his fur.

Molly was quite the cute pumpkin.

Oz was dressed as a Cadaver dog for Halloween.

Salem Witch Trials Memorial (Salem, MA)

In the midst of half drunk college pranksters, families on day trips, tourists dressed in their Halloween costume of choice and an assortment of other revelers stands a somber memorial to the victims of the Salem witch trials.

Directly across from shops that hawk kitschy tourists souvenirs and “haunted houses” designed to spook people of all ages, is a memorial that commemorates a dark part of American history. Without this dark time, there would be no kitschy souvenirs or haunted houses.

Dedicated in 1992, the Salem Witch Trials TerCentenary, the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, pays tribute to the 20 victims of the hysteria.

Twenty benches, representing each of the 20 victims, stretch out from the stone wall. Each bench or slab has each victim etched into it with the date of their death. Often times, people will leave stones, coins, flowers, notes and other little gifts or mementos behind.

At the entrance on the ground are snippets of the quotes from some of the victims just before their deaths.

Of course, trials has a double meaning and it is a fitting use of the term.

Haunted Happenings (Salem, MA)

Since it is Halloween is imminent and Salem is so well known for its Halloween attractions, I will be posting a series of blogs from the Salem, Massachusetts, area from my recent visits. If I took a photo of you or your dog and I haven’t posted it yet, I promise I will post it very soon. Also, I want to thank everyone (4 legged and 2 legged) and their folks who agreed to have their or their children’s photos taken. If you’re reading this, I greatly appreciate it.

Today’s blog features some of the sites, people and dogs of historic Salem.

There is something about Salem, or really any busy town or city, in the early morning hours. There’s a certain serenity in the early morning hours, especially when you contrast it with the throngs that will soon descend upon the town. While the city is still sleeping and the roar of vehicles seems a distant memory, street vendors prepare for a busy day and other early risers take to the empty streets. In a scant few hours, these city streets will be jammed.

There were some other early risers on the streets of Salem as well. I ran into Quincy while I was roaming the empty streets.

One of the things about Salem that attracts a lot of visitors, apart from the Halloween attractions, are the memorials and structures in the area. This particular structure in the heart of downtown Salem is the East India Square Fountain. In the warmer weather seasons, they often have water flowing in it. Designed as an abstract map of Salem, the two levels represent the pre-Colonial and contemporary shorelines of Salem.

A little farther down the road is the Revere Bell, a tribute to the citizens of Essex County which encompasses the most northeast section of Massachusetts, who have served in the armed services.

There is also a pretty arch near the Revere Bell that with overgrown foliage.

Howl-O-Ween Costumed Pet Parade (Salem, MA)

Dressing up for Halloween is not just for humans.

And there were plenty of pets on display Sunday in Salem, Massachusetts, to prove this.

Sunday, the dogs, and a few cats, took over Salem at the Howl-O-Ween Costumed Pet Parade.

The costumes ranged from the scary, like this dog bone skeleton

and this shark

to the funny like this pooch dressed as Beetlejuice.

In fact, a lot of animals dressed up as other animals and insects. Like these bees

and these bat dogs

or this elephant

There were also an octopus, lobsters, a spider and even a squirrel riding a dog.

Some dogs decided to dress more like humans like Sherlock Bones.

And for those of you who thought dinosaurs were extinct, think again

There were also a number of pets dressed as fictional characters such as Chewbacca and Superman/woman (with a tutu no less) and a super hero.

Sleeping beauty was also at the parade.

And of course, what would a Howl-O-Ween parade be without a witch?

There were also some sports themed costumes

Dogs were not the only participants. There were these two brave cats. One was dressed as a sailor and the other cat, Briggs, was just a spectator

Although all the participants were winners winners, the prize for best overall costume went to “Max” from the his “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” outfit.

Witch City (Salem, MA)

When people think of Salem (MA), they often conjure thoughts of the witch hysteria, ghosts or a litany of other things that may go bump in the night. But, this isn’t fair nor accurate. No, Salem is more than “haunted houses” and stores that sell kitschy souvenirs. Nor is it only fun to visit during the Halloween season. Still, it did feel a little odd wandering around Salem without a Fall chill in the air or leaves crunching beneath my feet. But, it wasn’t any less fun.

Salem, being an important port for trade in early colonial days, is rich with tradition and history. One of the main ports of trade is at Pickering Wharf in Salem Harbor.

Anchored in the wharf is The Friendship. The Friendship is a reconstruction of a 1700’s trading ship. Tours are available, except today as they were renovating the ship.

Stately, rustic buildings dot the coast line. The ornate building with the dome atop it is the Custom House. It is sandwiched in between the Salem Maritime National Historic Site (to the left) and the Simon Forrester House.

There is also a lighthouse located at the end of the pier.

Ducks and other birds frequent the harbor.

Pickering Wharf has a variety of restaurants where you can enjoy fish, lobster and, well, fish. It is also a hub for tour groups (whose favorite past time seems to be getting into my photos) and the occasional dog walker. I found this dog who is all black, except for her front left paw.

I could spend all day at Pickering Wharf. But, in the interest of time, I began my journey to some of the other attractions in Salem. The best part of visiting Salem is noticing the attractions and sites while you’re walking to each destination.

There was this house that caught my eye.

There was this display outside the Salem Witch Museum.

Irzyk Park, named after Brigadier General Albin F. Irzyk, has this retired Army tank in the park.

Saint Nicholas Church stands out against some of the more drab buildings.

I also bumped into Aida

As well as Simba and Jasmin

Eventually, I found my way to Winter Island.

Winter Island is a hidden jewel within the outskirts of Salem. A mile from the downtown Salem area, it is used as a RV/trailer park as well as a place to launch boats and hold functions. I walked the mile to Winter Island from downtown Salem. It is pretty much a straight walk or drive from tge downtown area. But, if you choose to drive. there is ample parking outside of Winter Island. There are an array of flowers and a pond (more like a reservoir) with a power plant adjacent which gives a nice touch. Geese and ducks are abundant there.

There is also a beach and an area for bird watching on Winter Island (it’s not really an “island” (it is more like a peninsula) but I will let it slide. It was the beach, Waikiki Beach, that was most impressive. Rocks are scattered along the beach and make shift trails on the hills behind the beach offer private views of the beach. Since it was low tide, I was able to walk along the rocks for better views of the harbor. A lighthouse gives a nice touch and birds and flowers are abundant.

The rocks at Waikiki Beach give the beach a unique landscape and offer a chance to get better views. It also attracts a variety of bird life.

There is also an area for bird watching at Winter Island. Although they are easily scared away, I did capture these images of a Robin and a Red Winged Black Bird.

There is also an old ammunition bunker in the bird watching area at Fort Pickering on Winter Island.

It’s a shame that Salem is only remembered for the more commercial aspects and urban legends. It isn’t all about being scared in Salem. In fact, this is the scariest thing I saw all day.

Of course, no visit to Salem would be complete without a photo of Roger Conant, the founder of Salem, and a visit to the World War II Memorial at Salem Commons.

You can keep yourself quite busy just visiting the parks, beaches and assortment of other attractions in Salem all year round, not just during Halloween. But, of course, I’ll be back in October anyways.
