2021 Devil’s Dash/Creepy Clown Race (Salem, MA)

Date Of Event: October 23, 2021

Location: Fort Ave, Salem, MA

Summary: Runners from all over the region competed in the 6.66 mile Devil’s Dash or the 3.33 mile Creepy Clown race.

It’s that time of the year again in Salem, MA.

Devils, clowns and other scary characters came together in Salem MA last weekend to compete in the Devil’s Dash/Creepy Clown race.

The race started with the Creepy Clown 3.33 mile race. The Devil’s Dash race started shortly after the clowns race began. The Devil’s Dash was a hellish 6.66 miles. Although it wasn’t required, participants were, of course, encouraged to wear a costume. And many of the runners got into the spirit of the event!

I’m still confounded how people can smile while they’re running. That, to me, is the truly creepy part of the race.

People of all ages could participate in the race. But, the little runners are always the most fun to photograph

It’s also fun to see families or groups of people running together. I was lucky to see some

The race wasn’t just for people. Pets could also participate in the race. Or, they could root on their favorite runners.

Although the race was a rimed event with standings, all of the participants were winners in my book. In fact, all of the participants walked (or ran) away with a medal for their efforts.

2021 Salem Zombie Walk (Salem, MA)

Date Of Event: October 2, 2021 (held annually the first weekend of October)

Location: Salem, MA (about 45 mins northeast of Boston, MA and 1 hour southeast of Concord, NH)

Summary: An assortment of zombies, mad scientists and other costumed revelers roamed the streets of Salem, MA in the annual Salem Zombie Walk

The annual Salem Zombie Walk in Salem, MA, has quickly become one of the most popular events in October.

There were young zombies, which are both the creepiest and cutest for me to see!

Zombie families (one of my favorites)

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_2102.jpg

Although the event is called the “zombie walk”, there weren’t just zombies at the event. There were werewolves and mad doctors among other spooky characters

The zombies began their walk at Salem Commons in Washington Square. They continued throughout the heart of downtown Salem, shrieking, gyrating and moaning the entire way.

It’s always nice to see familiar, friendly faces at these events. Throughout the years, I have attended and posted blogs about the past few zombie walks and I often see familiar faces there. This zombie is a regular at the yearly events and he always has a monster with him. I hope to see him and all the other zombies next year!

Pumpkin Ball (Yankee Candle Village, South Deerfield, MA)

Date Of Event: October 18, 2019

Location: 25 Greenfield Road
South Deerfield, MA

Hours: Sunday–Saturday | 10 am—6 pm

Universally Accessible: Yes

Website: Yankee Candle Village

Summary: As part of their Fall festivities, Yankee Candle’s flagship store in South Deerfield, MA, held a celebration of all things fall.  A costume contest, ice carving, a haunted house and dancers were just some of the attractions at this event.

IMG_8817

Yankee Candle thrilled everyone with a Halloween/Fall event for all ages last month.

Dancers, costumed visitors and even a haunted house were just some of the highlights of this celebration of all things fall!

Yankee Candle decorated the grounds and store in proper fashion.

Meet Leona, a 1,732.5 pound pumpkin grown by Dan and Holly Boyce of Vermont.  Leona is the second largest recorded pumpkin grown in Vermont!

IMG_8823

Many visitors and workers got into the spirit of the season by dressing up in their very own Halloween costumes!  The black and white photo pays homage to George Romero’s classic 1968 black and white movie “Night Of The Living Dead.”  The zombies would later dance to “Thriller” as part of the dance performance.  There was a costume judging contest as well.  But I had to leave before the winners were announced.

The dancers at Kasaks Dance Academy performed during the Pumpkin Ball.  The half hour performance included dancing by each age group (starting with the youngest to the oldest).

Crawling out to the dancer floor, the last group of dancers danced to Halloween themed music ending their performance by dancing to “Thriller” by Michael Jackson.

There was also face painting and a pumpkin decorating contest.

The fun wasn’t just in the store, though.  On the grounds of the shop there were alpacas, horse drawn rides, ice carving and a family friendly haunted house.

Joe Almeida of Sculptures In Ice carved a spooky ice sculpture at the beginning of the event.

There also alpacas from Grass Hill Alpacas.

IMG_9371

But, one of the more popular attractions at the event was the haunted house.  All of the proceeds from the haunted house ($5 admission) went to Dakin Humane Society, an animal shelter in Springfield, MA.  Inside the haunted house there were pumpkins, spiders, and other Halloween related decorations.

IMG_9428-2

After going through the haunted house, there were masks for visitors to put on for possible photo opportunities.  Two of the little visitors were nice enough to pose for me.

IMG_9460

Dogs celebrate Halloween too!  Scrappy, a year and a half old Chihuahua, was enjoying the unseasonably warm Fall weather.

“Haunted Happenings” Grand Parade (Salem, MA)

Date Of Event: October 3, 2019 (held annually the first week of October)

Location: Downtown Salem (Congress St, Derby St, Front St, Washington St, Essex St, Salem Common)

Summary: Salem’s Chamber Of Commerce kicked off the month long “Haunted Happenings” celebration for the month of October. Scores of heroes, monsters and kids came together to celebrate and march!

IMG_4332

Clowns, super heroes and super villians were only a few of the characters who marched the 24th annual “Haunted Happenings” parade last Thursday night to kick off Salem’s month-long “Haunted Happenings” celebration.

The theme of this year’s parade was “The Future Is Ours” and some of the participants used futuristic props to fit into the theme of the parade.  These park rangers, for instance, had a futuristic robot ranger in the parade!

IMG_3597

What would a Halloween parade be without candy?

Well, since candy tossing is not permitted, some of the participants ran over to the onlookers with fistfuls of goodies.

IMG_3432-2

What always entertains me about the Haunted Happenings parade is the unexpected and spontaneous things some of the marchers will do (more on this later).

For instance, who needs feet to walk?  These kids used an unorthodox method of marching.

Some of the marchers chose to drive in the parade.  The parade participants arrived in a variety of vehicles, or, er, caskets,

Some of the more popular people in the parade weren’t the participants.  These motorcycle cops slowed down to share some high fives with their fans.

IMG_3871-3

Holy Bat caves!  Where was Robin?

IMG_3852

Shiver me timbers, pirates and other characters were also there.

The usual suspects, Jason, Michael, Pennywise and Frankenstein’s monster were all their.  It’s a wonder we all made it out unscathed!

But, these guys and ladies were there to protect everyone!

IMG_3956

Not all of the marchers were dangerous or scary, though.  Mermaids, poets and this nice gentleman who had “lotion in his basket” were also there.  Ok, maybe the last guy wasn’t so nice.

Of course, there also were bands, baton twirlers and flag wavers.

The best part of the parade is seeing how much fun the kids are having.  In fact, it had some of them jumping for joy.

Just to preface this photograph, I will often bend down, kneel or squat down low when I photograph subjects or events, especially little subjects, so I can be at eye level when I photograph them.  So, I was photographing the parade, minding my own business when someone tapped me on the shoulder and got down to my eye level!  It was both unexpected and hilarious!

IMG_4172-2

Not all of the great costumes were worn by the people in the parade, though.  All of these people got into the spirit of the parade!  Or, they may just regularly dress this way.  I don’t judge!

Funny story.  I saw this cute unidog or dogicorn while I was walking to the parade.  Well, it turns out I had actually photographed her at the parade last year as well.  Ginger the Goldendoodle is 2 years old.  I look forward to photographing you next year and for many more years to come, Ginger!

IMG_3367-2

This was her costume last year!

IMG_8975

This is the first time I used a dedicated flash (a flash that is not a pop up flash and not built into the camera) during night time photography.  Hard to believe since I have been doing this photography thing for a while now.  But most of my photography is done during the early morning, daytime or sunset hours.  This is something of a common misconception though.  I would later learn in my research that you can and in some instances should use a flash during daytime hours and on sunny days.  But, in the past, I was so unsure and unfamiliar with night time photography settings, I would often switch to video when I thought it got too dark to photograph images (this is what I did at last year’s Halloween parade).

I think you can see the difference a speed lite can make (I didn’t use the flash for all of my night time photographs because some subjects weer near light sources when I shot them and I did want to save as much of my battery life for my flash as they can often use a lot of power). Plus, the dark, night time feel can be a good look for photos, especially for a Halloween parade shoot.  I think you may be able to tell which photos I took with the flash and without based on the lighting in the photos.

I have learned a great deal about flash photography and the best teaching tool is experience.  Although I am still learning, one tip for a shoot like this is to never point the flash directly at your subject.  Try tilting the flash upward or at an angle, particularly when shooting outdoors.  I am using the Canon Speedlite 470EX-AI and I use the ETTL (Evaluative Through-The-Lens) mode which is similar to using the Automatic setting on your camera.  The autoflash, is the mode where the camera uses information obtained through the lens (“TTL”) to calculate how much light the flash needs to emit for the appropriate brightness. The camera then automatically sets the flash output accordingly.  My next goal is to learn how to use the manual features to maximize the effect of my speed lite.

Halloween 2018 (Salem, MA)

Date Of Visit: October 31, 2018

Location: Downtown Salem, MA

IMG_1593

Another year and another Halloween in Salem, MA, in the books.  Although I’ve loved s

As always, the families that dress up and visit Salem are my favorite.  I love how they all get into the spirit of the day.

The girl to the right dressed as a lady bug in the photo below is holding my card.  I can’t think of a better advertisement.

IMG_1706

There were also some famous people in Salem for the big day!

One thing that never ceases to amaze me are the creativity people use while designing their costumes.

You’re not seeing double.  These two sets of Sanders sisters dropped by for a group photo.  Seeing that the theme of this year’s Haunted Happenings was the movie Hocus Pocus (some of the scenes for this film were filmed in Salem and the nearby area) it was appropriate.

IMG_1962

Rapunzel let her hair down.  Literally.

I’ve always thought there were two Halloween celebrations in Salem.  The day time celebration, which tends to be more family friendly and the night time celebration which has a more edgier and festive atmosphere.  Also, the costumes and props often have lights that illuminate the Halloween night.

As usual, I saw many dogs in Salem on Halloween.

Rocky is a 5 year old pit bull mix.  His coat, one that I see very often on pit bulls, is called a Brindle.

IMG_1746

Cannoli is a 7 year old German Shepherd.

IMG_2043

Until next year, or next week, Salem.

Below is a short video from Salem during Halloween

2018 Pumpkin Patch Decorating Contest (Salem, MA)

IMG_1793

What would Halloween be like without decorated pumpkins?  That is a question I ask myself each Halloween.

Every Halloween I make sure to view and photograph the Pumpkin Patch.  It’s a Halloween tradition.  Yet, every year I go I am always expecting that it will not be there.  And I am sure that will be the case one year.  But, for now, the pumpkins are on display every year at Salem Common during the Halloween season.

Over 100 local Salem students, including some from Carlton School, Bates School, and YMCA, participate in the contest.  They are grouped by age group

Pictured below are some of my favorites.

The pumpkins are usually on display until Halloween.

Not only were pumpkins were dressed up for Halloween.  People and their pets were also dressed up as their favorite characters.

It turns out she really did miss the scarecrow most!  I’m glad they’re back together again.

IMG_1881

I wasn’t sure who these people were dressed up as.  But, I thought they had cool costumes.  It turns out they are dressed up as characters from the television show, Dr. Who.

IMG_1800

Skeletor and He-Man mixed it up on the streets of Salem!

IMG_1860

“I’m David Pumpkins, man!”

IMG_1857-2

There were a lot of cute couples dressed to kill!

Sometimes the best costumes are the ones that include a group of people or family.

IMG_1843

IMG_1812

I loved the face painting and hats on these costumed revelers.

IMG_1804

Even though this may look like a statue or decoration it is an actual person or hay person.

IMG_1865

These people look like they put a lot of time working on their costumes.

Elvis has left Salem.

Jerry’s Fright Fairs (Witch City Consignment, Salem, MA)

Date Of Events: October 13 and 28, 2018

Location: Witch City Consignment, 302 Essex St, Salem, MA

Highlights: art, memorabilia and other horror related items for sale

Optimized-IMG_9675

The Witch City Consignment shop had two fairs: Freaks, Antiques And Uniques which was held October 13 and 14 and Jerry’s Fright Fairs which were held the last two weekends of the month.

The “boo-tique” specialized in art, dolls and masks among other types of horror related products.  There were two levels of vendors with dozens of artists at the shop.

Toni Gangi’s The Monkey Biz specializes in art with a twist.

Move over American Girl, Kat sells cute little dolls at Kats Creepy Creations.

There was lots of art by a variety of artists at the fair.

Oneail FX sells masks and effects for all of your Halloween needs.

The Witch City Consignment store also sold their own wares.  Everything from figurines and old magazines to holiday decorations (with a heavy emphasis on Halloween decorations of course).

The shop featured not only horror themed products.  There were also artifacts of a bygone era.

Sometimes you come across items that peak your interest, even if you wouldn’t want to buy them for your own use.  I always find things like these old photos to be so interesting.  I wonder where are these people now?  What were they really like and what is their story?

I had to take a close up of this Halloween decoration since my we had the very same decoration while I was growing up.  I wonder if it’s the same one.  It’s wonderful to think of how one random decoration can make you flush with nostalgia.

IMG_0976-2

Of course, during my visit to the fair there were lots of people and dogs in costume for Halloween.

Dogs were dressed up for the holiday as well!

IMG_0946-2

Sawyer, Super dog on the left, is an 11 year old Beagle.  Jack, dressed as Batman on the right, is a 10 year old Cavalier.

The appropriately named Lucifer is a 10 month old Siberian Husky.

IMG_0641

First, let me wish you all a very Happy Halloween!  To celebrate this special day I thought I would post photos from my recent visit to the “Dark Art” exhibit in, where else, Salem, MA.

Halloween meets art at the aptly named, “Dark Arts” exhibit at the Salem Arts Association building in Salem, MA.

Several artists, chiefly from Salem and other North Shore (the coastal area between Boston and New Hampshire) have their work displayed at the Salem Arts Association 211 Building.

The Salem Arts Association building is tucked away off Bridge St.  So you do have to keep your eyes open for it if you’re passing by.  In fact, I missed it a few times myself before I found the walkway located on the opposite side of the MBTA station.

The works of art vary widely from photographs, watercolors and mixed media among other types of art.  I have not posted them on any order other than the order they were posted in the building.

If you haven’t seen these treasures, you have until Sunday, November 4 to see them!  You can find the hours and directions to the Salem Arts Association in the details above.

At the time that I took these photographs all of the works of art were for sale if you’re interested.

Which work of art is your favorite?  I loved them all.  But, I voted for The Gourd Goblin. I loved the color scheme and the theme of the work.

I did it again.  After vowing to not take too many photos of the costumed visitors in Salem this year, well, that promise lasted about half an hour.   There were just too many cool costumes this year in Salem.

Rather than  posting all of the people in their creative and amazing Halloween costumes in one blog post, I am going to try to post a few of them at the end of my Halloween themed posts.  This means you may have some Halloween themes “left over” posts into November.  I will also probably have to post one with all of the costumed visitors in one post as well.  There are just too many to post in one blog post.  Here are a few of the more cool costumes I have seen in my visits to Salem this month.  And a few dogs too, of course.

IMG_0880-2

Alvinnn!  And the rest of the chipmunks made it out to Salem.  Look at those tails!

IMG_0872-3

What a super cute family!

IMG_0886

Another cute family!

IMG_0790-2

Brandon The Shape Shifter always comes up with such cool costumes on Halloween.  I can’t wait to see what he wears today!

While I was looking for cool stuff to photograph, I saw a bunch of police and other law enforcement teams with their dogs.  Claude, a 5 year old Black Lab really stood out to me.

IMG_0868

Look at those big brown eyes on Millie, a 5 year old Chihuahua!

I will be posting many more photos of Salem during the Halloween season in the upcoming week or weeks.  I hope you all read along!

Over 100 pets and their parents made their way to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site at Derby Wharf to show off their Halloween spirit!

The day started off rainy and a little raw.  But, after a half hour or so, the clouds began to diminish and the rain stopped and the weather was perfect for a pet parade.

Since there was such a large turnout, I was not able to get the names and breeds of all of the dogs.  But, I was able to get the names of the cute dogs below.

Tilda, a 14 year old Chihuahua from Salem, was dressed as Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
