7th Annual Salem Lawn Party (Salem, MA)

Date Of Event: September 13, 2025

Location: Salem Commons, N, Washington Square, Salem, MA (about 40 mins northeast of Boston)

Cost: Free

Dog Friendly: Yes

Summary: People enjoyed dancing, music, lawn games, classic cars and a vintage marketplace at Salem Commons earlier this month.

The annual Salem Lawn Party was the tops! People celebrated in their best vintage clothing and dusted off their dancing shoes! In fact, if you didn’t know any better, you might think it was the 1920s. But, the biggest attraction wasn’t the dancing nor was it the other activities such as the lawn games. No, one other thing took center stage.

The cars are always a popular attraction at the event! People love to walk around the cars, sometimes even being able to sit in them. So, it took me a long while to be able to take this photo without people being in the way.

What would a vintage lawn party be without some swinging music? Annie and the Fur Trappers provided the musical entertainment and kept the party going.

People were dressed to the nines in their finest vintage wear.

One of the more nattily dressed people at the party was Moustache Mike. Mike’s suit was slightly different than most suits, though. People could write on his suit. In fact, he encouraged it!

In addition to all of the positive and fun messages on his suit, there was some signatures from some very popular with ties to Salem. The famous Addams Family of Salem signed his suit!

Of course, there was also dancing! As someone with two left feet, I’m always impressed with their agility, grace and talent.

Even dogs like to dance!

There were also lawn games such as Cornhole, bocce and outdoor bowling!

The vintage market sold items that were popular during the olden days!

The party isn’t just for humans. Dogs like Penelope, a 5 year old pit mix, had fun at the party!

Cats also liked the event! Sal, a 2 and a half year old Maine Coon cat, had a fun time, while still keeping an eye out for the dogs!

While this year’s party is over, there’s plenty of time to work on your dance moves for next year’s party!

Here’s a video of people dancing at the party!

Dog Friendly: Yes

Summary: Music, vintage cars, art and a cardboard regatta were some of the highlights of this family friendly annual event

Formerly known as the Salem Maritime Festival, the Salem Merry-Time Festival has been a staple of every summer in Salem since 1988. After a short respite, the festival has been reborn as the Salem Merry Time Festival. And a merry time was had by all attendees.

This was the first maritime festival in Salem since 2020.

Melodies emanated from the tent at the wharf as a variety of musicians and singers kept the crowds entertained.

Sweet Soul Sounds sang musical gems of or influenced by the Motown era.

Meanwhile, the Fo’c’sle Four Band sang sea shanties

There were also activities for children (or the young at heart). Children made works of art based on the fish, starfish and other sea life in the waters of Salem. These are better than what I could do!

The USS Friendship was available for tours. But since it is being renovated there weren’t many photo opportunities there. I did take a few photos of the famous figurehead and some rope inside of the ship which is fully covered now for said repairs and renovations.

But the highlight of the event was the first annual (we hope) “Great Salem Cardboard Boat Regatta.” The cardboard regatta consisted of 17 boats made of cardboard, tape and a few other accessories. The designs of the boats varied from those with Nordic themes to boats with local themes.

But all of the boats showed a lot of creativity and craftspersonship

A crowd gathered along the wharf as the rowers got ready.

This fan was able to root up close for her favorite racers!

And this young fan came to the regatta in some appropriate attire for the event!

The competition was fierce as the rowers took off for the race!

While many of the boats were able to keep together and be competitive during the race, others weren’t so lucky. But, despite the sinking sensation they must have been feeling, all of the participants seem to take it in good natured ways.

Trophies were given for fast and slowest times and other notable results.

After all that hard work put into making these water crafts, they met an unseeminly end!

The ship you may have seen in the background is the Kalmar Nyckel, a Swedish ship built by the Dutch. The ship is notable for carrying Swedish settlers to North America in 1638. This, of course, is not the original, though. This replica is usually docked in Wilmington, DE. The ship was available for tours. But, unfortunately, I was only able to take photos of the exterior during this visit.

There were also some vintage cars and visitors dressed in vintage wear!

Don’t forget to go to their Vintage Lawn Party Saturday, Sep. 16.

There was also an artist working on a maritime related piece of art.

The Merry Time Festival is a dog friendly event. Gus came to the event with his shark fin harness!

To cap off the regatta, one of the officials sang a few sea shanties!

Are you looking to relive old memories and go back to an easier, simpler time?  While it’s not literally possible to go back in time, Pop’s Retro Shop can make you feel as though you’ve gone back in time, or that you’re living in your parent’s hey day.  Odds and ends older than many of you reading this post are scattered throughout this vintage shop in Lee, MA.

Coke and McDonald’s memorabilia take up much of the space at the Retro Pop Shop.  In fact, Ronald is there to greet you when you walk in the front door.

Old coke bottles, lobsters, Simpson dolls and toy trucks lie scattered around the shop. Walking around the store was much like walking around my childhood room (or present day apartment).

Vending machines, refrigerators and even old gas station filling tanks are stored inthe garage of the shop.

Just walking past the old lunch boxes and lava lamps brought back so many memories and happy thoughts.

But, be aware.  There are lots of creepy statues, dolls and other items that seem more suited for Halloween.  Of course, it only made me like the store all that much more.

Retro Pop Shop is truly a family run business.  While Pierre runs the store, his daughter owns and operates the Local Lee Homemade ice cream store attached to the Retro Pop Store.

Keeping with the decor of the inside of the shop, the outside of the store has some vintage and offbeat items lying around.  They must get some pretty big rats out in western MA based on the trap by the entrance.

Although dogs are not allowed in the store (Pierre said a customer had complained about dogs being in the shop in th past), they are welcome on the grounds outside.  I spotted this cute Samoyed in front of the shop.

Today’s featured site is a website for a store that is very similar to retro Pop Shop. While walking through the Retro Pop Shop, I couldn’t help but think of another store in New England that caters to the fans of vintage memorabilia.  But, Wild Bill’s Nostalgia hs so much more .
