Hours: Everyday, 24 hours a day
Cost: Free
Parking: You can park on the side of street or park at one of the farms or stables on the road and walk over to it
Handicapped Accessible: Ye

Highlight: A maple tree planted at the geographical center of the state of MA

This may look like any ordinary tree, an ordinary maple tree to be exact. ย But, it is actually a very special tree.
The tree located on appropriately named Central Tree Rd is the marker for the exact geographical center of the state of Massachusetts.
Previously, an Elm tree stood there but it died of Dutch Elm disease around 1969. ย The red maple tree was planted as a replacement.
A small wooden fence with a sign on it marks the center of the state.

I’m sure the residents love all the attention.

About New England Nomad
Hi I'm Wayne. Welcome to my blog.
I am a true New Englander through and through. I love everything about New England. I especially love discovering new places in New England and sharing my experiences with everyone. I tend to focus on the more unique and lesser known places and things in New England on my blog.
Oh yeah, and I love dogs. I always try to include at least one dog in each of my blog posts.
I discovered my love of photography a couple of years ago. I know, I got a late start. Now, I photograph anything that seems out of the ordinary, interesting, beautiful and/or unique. And I have noticed how every person, place or thing I photograph has a story behind it or him or her. I don't just photograph things or people or animals. I try to get their background, history or as much information as possible to give the subject more context and meaning. It's interesting how one simple photograph can evoke so much.
I am currently using a Nikon D3200 "beginner's camera." Even though there are better cameras on the market, and I will upgrade some time, I love how it functions (usually) and it has served me well.
The great thing about my blog is you don't have to be from New England, or even like New England to like my blog (although I've never met anyone who doesn't). All you have to like is to see and read about new or interesting places and things.
Hopefully, you'll join me on my many adventures in New England!

This is so cool! I’ve lived in Massachusetts my entire life but never paused to think about where the center is. Thank you for sharing!

Hello, interesting article, the smallest county in the UK is Rutland, it borders on the county I live in. :>)

Rutland…presumably named after the smallest county in England. And when I say ‘small’, it is very small!

It may very well be named after that county. We have a lot of areas named after places out your way!

I love the idea of a tree at the geographical center of the state – so much better than a plaque or statue alone!
Now, I’m wondering what (if anything) is at the geographical center of Wisconsin.

It is a very cute idea. It’s also good that they don’t have some gaudy sign or something like that. According to Appleton Public Library in Appleton, Wisconsin, the center of Wisconsin is in Wood county, 9 miles southeast of Marshfield. No word on whether there is a tree planted there ( : http://www.apl.org/node/428

Worcester is a pretty cool place. But no, not the center of Mass or of the universe for that matter! ๐ Thank you, Marie!
